WHERE DR PROGRAMMES BREAK DOWN

When your Disaster Recovery plan should work on the day, not just on paper

Most UK DR programmes pass desk-top reviews and fail real failovers. Untested runbooks, drifted secondary sites and unverified backups turn a manageable incident into a business outage.

Backups exist but failovers fail

Backups complete every night but nobody has run a full restore in 18 months. The first real failover discovers corrupted snapshots and missing dependencies.

Quarterly full DR tests with documented evidence. Restore-validation on every backup. Failover playbooks exercised, not just written.

RPO and RTO are still guesses

Stated recovery objectives have no contracted basis. When the board asks how long an outage costs, nobody has the verified answer, and FCA assessors will press hard on the gap.

Per-workload RPO + RTO contracted in writing. Measured against actual recovery time in every quarterly DR test.

Secondary site drifts from primary

Production changes propagate but secondary configuration drifts. The DR target ends up missing the policies and patches that production has, and the failover quietly breaks at cutover.

Continuous configuration replication. Secondary patched, hardened and policy-aligned with primary at all times.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DRaaS Disaster Recovery FAQ

DRaaS replicates your production workloads to a secondary site (typically a separate UK Azure or AWS region) and provides the orchestration, runbooks and 24/7 ops needed to fail over within contracted Recovery Time Objectives. We design the DR architecture, run quarterly tests with documented evidence, and provide named UK on-call architects for real incidents. Cyber-resilience is layered on top via our Cyber Security Services.

Per-workload Recovery Point Objective (data loss tolerance) and Recovery Time Objective (downtime tolerance) are agreed during the Business Impact Analysis and contracted in writing. Tier-1 workloads typically have RPO <5 minutes and RTO <15 minutes. Quarterly DR tests measure actual values against contracted targets; if we miss, we pay credits. Architecture aligns to Azure Site Recovery or AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery.

Real failovers, quarterly. Every workload is failed over to the secondary site, application-level recovery is validated, RPO and RTO are measured, and an evidence pack is produced for ICO, FCA or NHS DSPT audits. We have a 100% DR-test pass rate since 2018. Audit-ready evidence is available on request. Our methodology aligns with NCSC Cloud Security guidance and Cyber Essentials.

Default DR architecture uses UK South as primary + UK West as secondary on Azure, or eu-west-2 (London) primary + eu-west-1 (Ireland) secondary on AWS, keeping data within UK/EU borders for UK GDPR, ICO, FCA and NHS DSPT compliance. Cross-border DR is available where regulatory + commercial requirements demand it, with full residency documentation.

Fixed monthly per-workload fee covering replication, secondary-site hardening, quarterly tests, runbook maintenance and 24/7 ops. Cloud consumption (secondary-site compute + storage) is passed through at cost. Typical contract term is 12 months with a agreed exit. Pricing depends on workload count, RPO/RTO requirements and secondary-site footprint. The free DR readiness review covers all of it.

Backup creates a point-in-time copy of data so you can restore individual files or databases (deletion, corruption, ransomware). Disaster recovery (DR) goes further: it replicates whole workloads (application + data + configuration + dependencies) to a secondary location with contracted RTO (recovery time objective) and RPO (recovery point objective), and proves the failover works through quarterly testing. Backup answers “can I get my file back?” DR answers “can my business keep running when the primary site fails?” Most UK regulated organisations need both, integrated. See NCSC business continuity guidance.
